The science of meditation

There are certain desirable physiological changes that take place in a meditative state. Meditation can be applied in all life activities.
Here are some basic physiologic affect that meditation has :

1) It changes the breathing pattern. Most people start to breathe slower and deeper. However, some people breath shallow. The salient feature is the hunger for oxygen is reduced. probably because when you are in meditative state , you are processing everything efficiently, so your metabolic needs are reduced. Regular person breaths around 15 or greater times in a minute. Middle level meditator 4-5 times in a minute. and truly a meditator may be once in a minute.
2) Internal friction lubricated away due to meditative state.
3) There is a change in the electrical conductivity of the skin, it becomes less conductive. that seems to be something to do with skin being dryer, because SNS which makes sweat is somewhat less active  in meditative state.
4) most interesting physiological feature which can be objectively measured about a meditator is change in brain waves

There are 4 pattern of Brain waves :

1) Delta waves - is associated with dreamless sleep.
2) Alpha waves - relax but alert. in meditator we see strong alpha waves
3) Theta waves - state just leading to sleep, called hypnogogic state. in twilight zone
4) Beta waves - fairly agitated and fanatic

Most people can be seen in high alpha waves when their eyes are closed. meditator have their extreme high alpha with their eyes open also.

5) Another physiological change is the electrical activity in a  muscle.

Difference between psychotherapy and meditation :

1) unconscious memory or impressions of past experience : Objective of psycho therapy is to extract impressions of bad experiences and exposure and then de sensitization through continuous exposure and awareness.
However through meditation it automatically clears/purifies the memory.
2) self conflict - through psycho therapy self conflicts are resolved through cognitive behavior therapy at macro level, however through meditation the process itself clears out any conflict in mind without being aware of it.
